Adopting from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton doesn't just help an animal find a forever family; it also makes good financial sense for you. All of our pets:
If you are planning to adopt a pet, please bring with you a collar and leash if applicable. If you don't have one, we have plenty to choose from for a small fee. To make your adoption process as smooth as possible, we also recommend you bring a copy of your lease (if you rent your home) stating that you are allowed to have pets. Since many veterinary offices also have varying hours, we also recommend you bring the most recent copies of all vet records for animals you have. This information is needed before adoption applications can be approved by our staff. Having these items with you will help ensure you can adopt the same day you visit with an animal and will not delay your adoption process. Animals at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton can be placed on adoption hold for up to 24 hours for an approved application. If our staff must wait on records from a vet's office or leasing office, we can not guarantee that the animal will be held for an individual and you could run the risk of it being adopting by another person.
The Humane Society of Greater Dayton follows a variable-pricing model for adoption fees. Adoption fees for dogs range from $200 to $300. Montgomery County dog licenses are an additional $20.75. Cat adoption fees range from $45 to $75. Adoption fees start at $65 for rabbits and $50 for ferrets. Adoption fees for other small animals, including birds and guinea pigs, are determined by the shelter manager. Fees are based on breed and age.
When you adopt from the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, you are giving a pet a forever home and adding joy to your family. Here are some of our success stories, illustrating the impact that our pets and people can have on each others' lives.
START dogs are dogs that are Saved, Trained and Adopted and will Remain Together with their forever families as a result of their training. Each week, several lucky dogs in this program take a field trip from the shelter to Dayton Dog Training Club for an hour of obedience training with a Humane Society of Greater Dayton volunteer and dog trainer. Depending on the dog, training may include: walking loose on a leash, sit, stand, down, wait, meeting and greeting a friendly stranger, come when called and ignoring distractions. When you adopt a dog from the START program, you can attend two START classes for free to continue your new pet's training.
At the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, our goal is to strengthen the human-animal bond and to create loving, lifelong families through pet ownership.
